Tips for Home Moving Service in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, no matter you are moving from a big house to a cosy apartment; eventually got a ticket to buy a house or ending the long queue of application of public housing, the issue of home moving is a hard topic to address. EASYMOVE would like to share with you some tips on packing preparation and quotation before home moving so that you won't get stuck or stoned while moving houses.

Understand the Packaging Details and Quotations

During the process of home moving in Hong Kong, pay attention to how you pack the items to be moved and how does the moving company charge on the packing. It will reduce unnecessary miscommunication. Here are some practical tips for you to learn more about making moving easy:

1: Packaging Materials

Choosing the right packaging materials can ensure the safety of items during transportation:

*Carton Box*: It is recommended to use double-pit cartons because of their higher load-bearing capacity.

*Small box*: Suitable for holding heavier items and it is easy to carry.

*Large Box*: Suitable for carrying lighter items to avoid being too heavy and difficult to carry.

*Protective Materials*: Such as bubble wrap, plastic wrap, sealing tape, etc. These are all necessary materials for moving.

Some moving companies will embed carton boxes and packaging materials to the bill, but not all of them. Enquire carefully at the time of quotation so that you can plan whether you will  purchase them yourself, or order them from the moving company at an extra cost.

2. Transportation of Fragile items

Never rely on the "Fragile" label on the box only. Especially when you pack your electrical appliances, such as TVs, cabinets with glass and other fragile items, you will need to wrap them with extra care. For example, wrap them completely with the plastic wrap, and then use special packing materials (such as the felt sheet for moving purpose). Use a blanket) to protect it, ensuring that the items are packaged properly and safely.

3. Moving Large Objects to Village house

If you plan to move to a village house in Hong Kong, moving large items is particularly challenging, especially when the stairs are narrow. Additional equipment and manpower are required, such as stair handling. Technically speaking, the items can be moved by the workmen through the stairs, but large furniture or items may not be moved if it is too narrow. Talk to the moving company that they will decide using a crane to lift the items from the terrace to the ground.

4. Moving Quotation and Charging Standards

There are different charging methods for moving services in Hong Kong. Learn more and identify the service you will need to avoid unneccesary charges (which does not break your bank but you will be surprised...) Moving companies in Hong Kong are usually charging by man hours or charging by number of items:

- Charge by Man Hour: Ask the moving company on how many people they will arrange to help with the moving work this time and what is the cost of man hour. Some moving companies will arrange a project manager to communicate with you onsite. Usually the PM's hourly rate is much higher than that of the workers who help move the items.  As long as he contributes to the project, you will need to pay for his work hours if it is agreed. So it’s so important to understand how is it calculated.

- Charge per item: Some moving comapnies charge on the number of items that you plan to move. Learn about the charging standards for each item and take the initiative to ask for the charging details for items of different sizes.

5. Surcharges
When you request a quote, you should pay attention to whether the moving company will fore you to offer tips to the crew. Some movers may ask for an extra 20% of the order as the tip!  When it's been asked at the time of moving, it is really difficult to refuse at that moment. Talk to the moving company in advance and communciate well about the possible surchages.

Enquire about the additional charges mentioned above, such as cranes, picking up the stairs, requirements for remote areas such as the Island area and Airports. Home moving is a hard work for the workmen that please do not evaluate their effort by using the minimum wage standard. It is always good to communicate and confirm when making a quotation for high transparency to avoid future disputes. We hope that everyone moves to his new homes  happily on the moving day.
